I want to tell you a story...

It was late, around 8 p.m., and I was sitting in a rented van outside a property in Derby, waiting to let some new tenants in.

They were arriving from abroad, delayed, unfamiliar with the city, and exhausted.

My business partner at the time told me bluntly: “Screw it. Let them stay in a hotel.”

But I couldn’t do it. These weren’t just names on a spreadsheet. They were people, arriving in a strange country, in the dark, with nowhere else to go.

So I went to meet them rather than leave them stranded.

However, that same night, my son was watching his very first fireworks show as it was Guy Fawkes night in the UK.

But I wasn’t there.

I watched it through a screen, a shaky video call on my phone.

Watching my little boy’s eyes light up and seeing his beaming smile, not from beside him, but from a van, parked alone on a cold street. I had to hold back tears.

Not just from missing the moment. But because just two months earlier, I’d buried my dad.

Fireworks night had always been our thing growing up. Home fireworks displays in the garden, sparklers, laughing. So many great memories.

And now here I was, missing the chance to pass that on to my own son.

Because of my new found "job" in property.

Because I was the guy with the keys, the one doing the late-night callouts, the one running the business operations and holding things together through gritted teeth and guilt.
